2009 Charles Darwin 200th Anniversary £2 Two Pound Coin/£2 William Shakepshere coin. Kristen Leigh Auctions Limited. Two Pounds 2009 Darwin. The bi-metallic £2 coin is the largest circulating coin denomination of the Pound Sterling. It was introduced in 1998 ( earlier two pound coins were made of Nickel brass, were intended as commemorative, and did not circulate much). The 2009 Two Pound Coin - Charles Darwin Charles Darwin (1809-1882) is universally known for his work on evolution. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and had compelling evidence in his book On the Origin of the Species published in 1859.

The Royal Mint is producing a limited edition 2009 Charles Darwin £2 Coin Pack. It’s described as follows, with bits of text from all over the Royal Mint’s description pages:

This commemorative £2 coin for 2009 celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. The reverse of the coin, designed by Suzie Zamit, features a profile portrait of Charles Darwin and a chimpanzee together with the denomination TWO POUNDS, the year dates 1809 and 2009 and DARWIN.
